Luggage on a Venice water taxi is not a side issue: it is the variable that decides which transport you take and how much you pay. A motorboat swallows suitcases that would be a nightmare on a crowded vaporetto, but it also has limits, surcharges and one weak point nobody mentions: your hotel’s canal. Here are the official luggage rules, the operators’ price lists, and the practical answers for pushchairs, wheelchairs and awkward landings.

How many bags are included

The Comune di Venezia (city council) tariff does not set a maximum number of suitcases: it sets the threshold above which you pay. The surcharge applies to every bag beyond the first four and beyond the number of passengers.

It applies to metered rides and fixed routes alike. In plain terms: two people with two suitcases and two rucksacks pay nothing extra; four people with six suitcases pay two surcharges of €3.

Watch the double test, which is the part that confuses everyone: both the four pieces and the number of passengers count. The real limit is the boat, not the tariff

Capacity is decided not by the city but by each motorboat’s certificate. Operators generally state a maximum of 10 passengers; Consorzio Motoscafi quotes up to 12 suitcases per boat, with a surcharge of €5 per suitcase from the fifth and €10 per person from the fifth passenger. These are the operator’s commercial conditions, not the city tariff: when you ask for a quote, get them to tell you which basis it is built on.

In practice a standard motorboat comfortably absorbs four large wheeled cases plus hand luggage in the stern well and on the cabin roof. Ski bags, instruments, bikes and bulky items

The tariff has no “oversized baggage” category: anything that is not a normal suitcase counts as an extra €3 piece, but the real question is whether it fits. Ski bags, double basses, twin pushchairs and dismantled bikes almost always go on a motorboat; a whole bike does not, unless agreed in advance.

The critical point: the tide and the water door

• High water: the motorboat physically cannot pass under the bridges of the narrow canals and cannot reach the hotel.
• Low water: the canal may be too shallow to navigate, or the entrance steps may sit too far above the boat for a safe step down.

3. Check the tide forecast for the day you arrive and allow for it in your timing, not just your landing: the pick-up can slip too.

The same information will help you pick the type of transfer: if you already know you will end up walking five minutes over a bridge with three suitcases, shared may suit you better than private.

Luggage on shared transfers

A shared water taxi costs about €39 per person, but on luggage it is less flexible than private: the boat collects passengers bound for different areas and space is counted. The limit is not a regulated tariff, it is a reseller’s condition, and it varies from product to product. The listing for the best-selling shared service states one piece plus one item of hand luggage per person, with a surcharge for extra pieces; the one for the reverse trip to the airport drops to one piece per person only. At boarding: five minutes of common sense

From the Marco Polo arrivals hall to the darsena, the airport’s boat dock, it is a 7–10 minute walk along a covered gallery with moving walkways. With a trolley you need not rush, but allow the time. A few habits that prevent damage and delay:

• On the jetty, hand the suitcases to the driver one at a time; do not step aboard holding them, as the platform can move.

• In damp weather or rain, ask for the bags to go in the cabin rather than in the stern.
