That said, our verdict splits in two. For a shared water taxi from the airport it is the easiest place to book: a per-person price, free cancellation within the deadline, and tens of thousands of reviews left only by people who actually travelled. For a private water taxi, on the other hand, the platform price is noticeably higher than what the same Venetian consortia charge on their own websites.

What GetYourGuide is

It is a marketplace for tours, tickets and excursions, headquartered in Berlin and founded in Zurich. The company operating the service is GetYourGuide Deutschland GmbH; the transport contract is formed directly between you and the local supplier, while the platform acts as a commercial agent and collects the money. That has one practical consequence: GetYourGuide is not the carrier and cannot issue you an invoice for the service itself, only a payment confirmation.

Its scale explains why it dominates the search results. In the latest reported financial year the company states more than €4 billion in gross booking value, over 33 million experiences sold and its first profitable set of accounts. The catalogue is put at 200,000 experiences with 50,000 supply partners, although the company’s own pages quote figures that do not always match. Suppliers are charged a stated commission of between 20% and 30% of the selling price, depending on the country the activity takes place in.

What it offers in Venice and what it costs

Under Venice airport transfers the platform lists dozens of products, but three of them cover almost all the real demand. The prices and ratings below are the ones recorded at the time of checking.

The single most important detail is the price basis: the private boat is priced per boat, the shared one per head. With four people the private transfer works out cheaper than the shared one; with two, the opposite. On the shared service, that 50–100 minute range is not a technicality: the boat makes several stops along the Grand Canal and you may well be the last one off.

The boats do not belong to the platform. On the airport transfers the listed supplier is Bucintoro Viaggi, a Venetian inbound travel agency whose profile states that it is controlled by Alilaguna and that it runs the transfers through its partner Venezia Turismo. The desk where you present your voucher is in the airport arrivals area; the exact meeting point is printed on the voucher.

Strengths

• Clear cancellation terms. The general rule is a full refund up to 24 hours before the activity starts; products are labelled refundable, partially refundable or non-refundable.
• Reviews only from people who travelled. Only customers who booked and completed the activity can leave a rating, and recent reviews carry more weight in the score.
• A huge volume of ratings on the shared airport transfer: a sample of tens of thousands of trips makes the score far more stable than that of a product with fifteen reviews.
• No separate booking fee for you: the displayed price already includes the commission paid by the supplier and is normally inclusive of taxes.
• “Reserve now, pay later” on selected activities, with the charge taken 72 hours before departure.
• Refund of the difference if you find the same activity from the same supplier cheaper elsewhere, under the price guarantee.

Weaknesses

• The price can be higher than the same service elsewhere, and the general terms say so: the platform makes no price-parity promise. The concrete comparison on the airport ↔ city centre run is brutal: around €215 per boat here, against €160 on the Consorzio Motoscafi Venezia website and €140 on Venezia Taxi’s, prepaid rates recorded on the same day.
• Product ranking is influenced by commission. The platform says so openly: revenue, including supplier commissions, is one of the sorting criteria. The first result is not necessarily the best one.
• Reviews that only mention the booking process or customer service can be removed. The score therefore measures the excursion, not the platform’s customer care: it is one reason ratings here run higher than on open review sites.
• No 14-day EU right of withdrawal on fixed-date activities, which in practice means every transfer.
• Support with no public phone number, apart from the line dedicated to withdrawal: you go through chat, email and the help centre.
• A regulatory penalty in Italy. The Italian competition authority, the Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato, fined GetYourGuide Deutschland GmbH €5.6 million in the investigation into Colosseum tickets bought up in bulk with automated tools and resold bundled with other services; according to the trade press, the Lazio administrative court upheld the fine.

What travellers say

Bucintoro Viaggi, the supplier behind the best-selling transfers, averages 4.3 from over 93,000 reviews on GetYourGuide and 3.6 from over 3,300 reviews on Tripadvisor. That is not a contradiction: they are two different samples. On GetYourGuide only people who booked can write, and they are invited to do so after the trip; on Tripadvisor anyone can write, including people who bought nothing. The score drops as the pool widens, and it is more honest to publish the method than to average the two.

Among the negative reviews the recurring theme concerns the island tours more than the transfers: one Tripadvisor traveller sums up the day by saying they “drop you off and you fend for yourself”. On the airport transfers, the complaints cluster instead around waiting at the desk until the boat fills up, and the order of the stops.

On the Rick Steves travel forum the recurring advice points a different way: for a private water taxi, regulars steer people towards booking direct with the Consorzio Motoscafi Venezia, citing prices lower than the platforms’. It is anonymous and not recent, but it matches what we found when we queried the consortia’s own booking engines.

When to choose it and when not to

• Choose GetYourGuide if you are travelling as one or two people and the shared boat is enough: you pay per head, cancel free within the deadline and know your spend in advance. How the shared water taxi really works is covered separately.
