Tiqets review: booking Venice transfers

Instant tickets on your phone and the cheap links to the airport: what Tiqets sells in Venice, at what price, and where the traps are hiding.

We are a Tiqets affiliate and we earn a commission on bookings made through our links, at no extra cost to you: we say that before the verdict, which has two sides to it anyway. Tiqets is the simplest platform on which to buy the cheap links to Marco Polo airport — the Alilaguna boat and the direct bus, ticket on your phone within minutes — and a sensible choice for a shared water taxi. It is also the platform you need to read most carefully on the two lines that matter: cancellation, which is optional rather than automatic, and the possible booking fee, which here does exist.

What Tiqets is

It is a marketplace for museum, attraction and experience tickets, headquartered in Amsterdam and built around the idea of the instant ticket on your phone. The company is Tiqets International B.V.; the contract is governed by Dutch law. Contrary to what people assume, it does not only sell culture: the Venice page lists a “transfers” category with dozens of products, alongside historic sites, museums, cruises and city cards.

Ownership has changed hands: Expedia Group announced an agreement to acquire Tiqets, at an undisclosed price, with completion subject to the works council’s opinion. Neither company then published a completion announcement: the trade press inferred that the deal had closed from Expedia’s quarterly results, which report acquisition spending without attributing it to Tiqets. The Tiqets “about us” page still makes no mention of Expedia. The only direct documentary trace is in the contract terms: for US customers the payment is collected by Travelscape LLC, an Expedia group company.

The stated scale is over 60 countries, more than a thousand cities and 17 languages. Here too the company’s published numbers do not line up with each other — partners, customers served and languages change from page to page — so treat them as orders of magnitude. The commission rate withheld from suppliers is not published anywhere: the stated model is a margin on the net price.

What it offers in Venice and what it costs

Four products cover almost everything an arriving traveller needs. Prices and ratings are the ones recorded at the time of checking.

ProductPriceDurationRating
Shared water taxi airport → city centre~€39 per person~30 min on the water4.3 from over 1,000 reviews
Alilaguna boat airport ↔ city centre€18~50 min and up depending on the line4.3 from over 1,000 reviews
Direct bus airport ↔ Piazzale Roma€12~20 min4.7 from over 500 reviews
Water taxi Santa Lucia station ↔ hotel~€39 per person3.3 from 15 reviews

Two words of warning on how to read that. First: the boat price matches the single airport ↔ Venice ticket Alilaguna sells at its own counter, so you are not paying a mark-up here, you are buying convenience and your own language. Second: the water taxi from the station has a low rating, but it rests on fifteen ratings, far too small a sample to conclude anything; it is more useful to know that the meeting point is at the desk outside the station and that the exact spot is given on the voucher.

As on every big platform, the boats are not Tiqets’. On the airport water transfers the listed supplier is Bucintoro Viaggi, a Venetian inbound travel agency, and for the Alilaguna boat the voucher has to be shown at that same agency’s office.

Strengths

  • Transparency about the supplier. It is the only one of the three big platforms that publishes the registered company name and address of whoever delivers the service on the product page, stating that it acts on the supplier’s behalf. For working out who you are really dealing with, that is a genuine advantage.
  • Fast ticket delivery. The help centre states that 98% of tickets are delivered within 15 minutes, with an SMS as backup; tickets stay in the app’s wallet and work offline.
  • Coverage of the budget segment. The Alilaguna boat at €18 and the direct bus at €12 are precisely the two products that are missing, or harder to find, elsewhere.
  • Reviews only from people who bought, with the score calculated as a straight average, with no hidden weighting.
  • Dynamic pricing, openly stated: the platform admits the price changes with the season, the day and the time. It is inconvenient, but it is said out loud.

Weaknesses

  • Cancellation is an option, not a right. The contract terms, which are the binding part, say you can only cancel if the product allows it; the help centre, by contrast, describes free cancellation as a box you tick at checkout. Even among the Venice products the rules do not match: one reads “until 23:59 the day before”, another “24 hours before the visit”. Read that line, not the generic claim.
  • There may be a booking fee charged to you. The platform states that it applies one when it cannot avoid it. That is a real difference from GetYourGuide and Viator, which declare no traveller-facing fee: look at the total before you confirm.
  • “Instant” comes with a contractual exception: the supplier is allowed up to 48 hours to issue the tickets, with a full refund if it fails to. In practice it almost never happens, but if you are landing in three hours it is worth knowing.
  • No phone number for support: chat, WhatsApp and email only, stated as available 24 hours a day in English.
  • It is not an account-based platform: the email address on the booking cannot be changed, so type it carefully.
  • A regulatory penalty in Italy. In the investigation into Colosseum tickets bought up in bulk with automated tools, the Italian competition authority, the Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato, also fined Tiqets International BV €4.3 million; according to the trade press, the appeal to the Lazio administrative court was dismissed.
  • Reviews that only mention the booking process or customer service can be removed, and external reviews may appear with their source noted: the score on the product page is therefore not 100% a verdict on the Tiqets service.

What travellers say

On Trustpilot the platform’s profile averages 4.3 from around 61,000 reviews, with three quarters of them top marks and roughly 7% bottom marks: a good result for a sample that size, recorded on the date of checking and constantly moving.

The recurring themes in the negative reviews are three, and they concern attraction tickets above all: “skip-the-line” entries that skip nothing, refusals to refund when the customer picks the wrong date, and slow replies from support. On the Venice transfers the supplier is the same one feeding the other platforms, so the same observations apply: on the shared boat you wait at the desk until it is full, and the order of the stops decides how long the trip takes.

It is worth remembering the comparison between platforms on one identical service: the shared water taxi from the airport scores 4.3 on Tiqets, 4.4 on GetYourGuide and 4.0 on Viator. That is not a quality ranking, it is a difference in method — who is allowed to vote, and how the average is calculated.

When to choose it and when not to

  • Choose Tiqets if you want to reach the centre cheaply: the Alilaguna scheduled boat at €18 or the direct bus are the quickest products to buy here.
  • Choose Tiqets if you arrive by train and want to finish the last leg by boat without haggling: the jetty logistics are explained on the Santa Lucia station page.
  • Consider GetYourGuide if you need the shared water taxi and want the largest review sample, or a private boat priced per boat: the comparison is in our GetYourGuide review.
  • Call the consorzio if you are travelling at night or on a flight prone to delay: the rules and night surcharges are on the water taxi at night page.
  • To work out which option really suits your itinerary, start from the comparison of water taxi, Alilaguna and vaporetto and the figures gathered in fares and costs.

In short: on Tiqets the water taxi and the cheap airport links are easy to buy, in a few minutes, with the supplier named outright. In exchange it asks for two extra minutes of reading on cancellation and on the total to pay. Give it those two minutes and it is one of the fastest ways to have your ticket in hand before you land.

Frequently asked questions

Does Tiqets sell transfers too, not just museum tickets?

Yes. The Venice page has a dedicated transfers category, with the shared water taxi from the airport, the Alilaguna boat, the direct bus to Piazzale Roma and a few boat hops within the city.

How much do Venice transfers cost on Tiqets?

At the time of checking: shared water taxi from the airport about €39 per person, Alilaguna boat €18, direct bus airport ↔ Piazzale Roma €12, boat transfer from Piazzale Roma to St Mark's about €18.

Does the ticket really arrive straight away?

In most cases yes: the help centre states that 98% of tickets are delivered within 15 minutes. The contract terms, however, allow the supplier up to 48 hours to issue them, with a full refund if it fails to.

Can you cancel a Tiqets ticket?

It depends on the product. Free cancellation is an option you select at checkout and the general terms, by default, provide no refund: check the cancellation line on the product page before you pay.

Does Tiqets charge booking fees?

On some orders, yes: the platform states that it applies a booking fee when it cannot avoid one. That is a real difference from the other platforms, so look at the total at the payment stage.

Who runs the shared water taxi sold on Tiqets?

The product page names the Venetian agency Bucintoro Viaggi as the supplier, with its registered company name and address. For the Alilaguna boat the voucher has to be shown at that same agency's office.
